Adult Spacing and Smile Correction on Class I Basis

This 37-year-old patient presented with a Class I occlusion on a Class I skeletal base, seeking help for generalized spacing in both arches that was affecting his smile and confidence.

Following a detailed clinical evaluation, we identified a Bolton discrepancy due to undersized upper anterior teeth – contributing to both aesthetic and functional concerns. To address this, we developed a customized treatment plan focused on adult spacing and smile correction on Class I basis.

The treatment strategy included:

Mesialization of posterior teeth to help close generalized spacing
Retroclination and intrusion of anterior teeth to improve anterior guidance and smile arc
Interproximal reduction (IPR) in the lower arch to manage mild crowding and coordinate arch forms

This carefully sequenced approach enabled us to close the spaces, balance tooth proportions, and establish a more harmonious and functional anterior relationship—all while preserving the patient’s natural bite.

The orthodontic treatment was completed in 14 months, and retention was maintained with fixed retainers in both arches, complemented by Essix removable retainers to ensure long-term stability and aesthetics.

This case highlights how adult spacing and smile correction on a Class I basis can be effectively achieved using modern orthodontic techniques, providing lasting functional and cosmetic results without invasive procedures.
