The Basics

What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are custom-made transparent trays that fit closely over your teeth and move them, a small amount at a time, into a planned position. You wear them around 22 hours a day and swap each set for the next every one to two weeks.

They’re made from a medical-grade thermoplastic, strong enough to apply controlled pressure to specific teeth, thin enough to sit almost invisibly against your smile. There are no wires, no brackets, and nothing bonded permanently to your teeth. You take them out to eat, brush, and for the occasional special occasion.

Before any aligner is manufactured, your treatment is planned in 3D. We map exactly how each tooth needs to move, in what order, and over how many weeks. Most patients complete treatment in six to eighteen months. Complex cases can take longer, and we’ll always give you a realistic timeline before you start.

The Benefits

Why Choose Clear Aligners?

Practically Invisible

Translucent plastic is far less visible than traditional braces. Most people you meet won’t realize you’re wearing them at all.

Removable When Needed

Take them out for meals, cleaning, playing wind instruments, or any special occasion, then you can slip them back in.

Custom-Made For You

Every set is precisely fitted to your teeth using a 3D digital plan. They’re as comfortable as they are accurate.

Suitability

The Process

How Clear Aligner Treatment Works at Ocean

01

Your 3D Scan

We perform a high-tech 3D scan of your teeth using our cutting-edge orthodontic equipment, which enables us to structure and plan the movements your teeth will need to follow in order to obtain your brand-new smile.

02

Sets of aligners

When you get your initial set of aligners, we’ll do our best to ensure you’re happy and comfortable with how the Clear Aligners Treatment feels, offering you advice on how frequently you should replace them and how to care for them at your check-ups.

03

The Retainer

Once treatment is complete, you’ll be given a retainer to keep your teeth in their new position. We’ll talk through your options, bonded, removable, or both, at the right point in your treatment.

Making It Affordable

Spreading the Cost of Treatment

Clear aligner treatment is a meaningful investment, and we want it to be accessible. For private patients, we offer finance options through V12 Finance, so your treatment can be paid for across manageable monthly installments rather than a single upfront payment.

We also accept payment by debit card, credit card (excluding American Express), bank transfer, or cash.

Every patient’s case is different, which is why we don’t list prices online. We prefer to discuss cost properly at your consultation, once we’ve examined your teeth and explained exactly what your treatment will involve. There’s no pressure to commit on the day.

Why Ocean

Why Edinburgh Patients Choose Ocean Orthodontic Clinic

There are other orthodontic options in Edinburgh. Here’s why the patients who do their research tend to end up here.

Treated by a GDC Specialist Orthodontist — Not a General Dentist

Most clinics offering clear aligners and braces in Edinburgh are run by general dentists with short orthodontic training. Dr Mustafa is on the GDC Specialist List in Orthodontics (No. 105727), with a PhD in Orthodontics and a postgraduate diploma from Warwick. That difference matters most when your case is complex — or when something doesn’t go quite to plan halfway through.

Diamond Invisalign Provider

The Diamond tier is held by the highest-volume Invisalign providers in the UK. It isn’t a badge anyone can buy — it reflects sustained experience across hundreds of treated cases. When you’re trusting someone to move your teeth, volume of experience matters.

Non-Extraction Wherever Clinically Possible

Dr Mustafa’s clinical philosophy is to preserve every healthy tooth where it’s safe to do so. Many patients told they need extractions elsewhere have been successfully treated at Ocean without them. That approach earned us the British Orthodontic Society’s Against the Odds award — twice.

Award-Winning — Scotland’s Best Practice 2023

Ocean Orthodontic Clinic won Overall Practice of the Year and Best New Practice at the Scotland Dental Awards 2023 — competing against every dental practice in Scotland. These are independently judged awards based on clinical standards, patient experience, and outcomes.

Got Questions?

Everything You Need to Know Before You Book

Here are the questions we hear related Clear Aligners most often from patients across Edinburgh — answered honestly.

Dr Mustafa is a GDC-listed specialist orthodontist with a PhD in orthodontics, a postgraduate diploma from Warwick, and 20+ years treating complex cases. Most clinics in Edinburgh offering Invisalign are general dentists who’ve done a short training course — not specialists. The difference matters most when cases are complex, or when treatment needs adjusting mid-way through.

Most patients complete treatment in six to eighteen months. Mild cases can finish in four to six months; complex cases sometimes take up to twenty-four months. At your consultation, Dr Mustafa will give you a realistic estimate based on your specific case.

Most patients feel mild pressure and some tenderness for two to three days after fitting each new aligner — similar to gentle muscle ache. It eases as your teeth adjust. Aligners are generally more comfortable than fixed braces because there are no wires or brackets to irritate the inside of your mouth.

At least 22 hours every day. They come out only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and brushing. Wearing them less than this slows treatment down and can compromise your final result.

No. Aligners are removed for all eating, and for any drinks other than water. You’ll also need to brush your teeth before putting them back in — this protects both the aligners and the teeth underneath from staining and decay.

It’s best not to. Hot drinks can warp the plastic, and dark drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, and cola will stain them. Take the aligners out, drink, rinse, and put them back in.

Most patients need a few small tooth-coloured shapes called attachments bonded to certain teeth — they help specific movements happen predictably. They’re nearly invisible, and they’re removed at the end of treatment with no damage to the tooth.

IPR (interproximal reduction) is very light polishing between specific teeth to create small amounts of space — usually no more than the thickness of a fingernail. It’s painless, only done where the plan calls for it, and not every patient needs it.

In roughly one in three cases, teeth haven’t moved precisely as planned by the final aligner. That’s normal. A short series of refinement aligners is then made to fine-tune the result — and at Ocean, refinements are built into your original treatment, not charged as extra.

Yes — and for life. Teeth naturally want to drift back towards their original position, so retention is genuinely lifelong. We offer fixed (bonded) retainers, removable retainers, or a combination, and we’ll recommend the right approach for you near the end of treatment.

Yes. Relapse after previous braces is one of the most common reasons adults come to see us about clear aligners. In most cases we can correct it without going back to fixed braces — particularly if the relapse is mild to moderate.

Mild to moderate overbites — often yes. Severe overbites with skeletal involvement may need fixed braces, or a combined approach. Dr Mustafa will assess your bite properly at the consultation and tell you honestly which option will work.

Yes. Clear aligners are increasingly popular with teens — particularly those who play wind instruments, contact sports, or simply don’t want fixed braces visible at school. Suitability depends on jaw development and on the teen being able to commit to the wear time.

NHS orthodontics is available only for under-18s who meet strict clinical criteria, and clear aligners are very rarely provided on the NHS. As a private specialist orthodontic practice, we offer aligners to both adults and children who choose to be treated privately.
