The Basics

What Are Retainers?

Retainers are custom-made orthodontic appliances designed to keep your teeth in their new position after braces or clear aligner treatment. Once teeth have been straightened, they naturally try to shift back over time. Wearing retainers helps protect your results and maintain your smile long-term.

At Ocean Orthodontics, Dr Mustafa creates a personalised retention plan based on your teeth, bite, and treatment history. Whether you’ve had metal braces, clear braces, or aligners, retainers are the final and essential stage of orthodontic treatment.

Without retainers, teeth can gradually move, even years after treatment finishes.

Making It Affordable

Spreading the Cost of Treatment

Metal Fixed Braces is a meaningful investment, and we want it to be accessible. For private patients, we offer finance options through V12 Finance, so your treatment can be paid for across manageable monthly installments rather than a single upfront payment.

We also accept payment by debit card, credit card (excluding American Express), bank transfer, or cash.

Every patient's case is different, which is why we don't list prices online. We prefer to discuss cost properly at your consultation, once we've examined your teeth and explained exactly what your treatment will involve. There's no pressure to commit on the day.

Why Ocean

Why Edinburgh Patients Choose Ocean Orthodontic Clinic

There are other orthodontic options in Edinburgh. Here's why the patients who do their research tend to end up here.

Treated by a GDC Specialist Orthodontist — Not a General Dentist

Most clinics offering clear aligners and braces in Edinburgh are run by general dentists with short orthodontic training. Dr Mustafa is on the GDC Specialist List in Orthodontics (No. 105727), with a PhD in Orthodontics and a postgraduate diploma from Warwick. That difference matters most when your case is complex — or when something doesn't go quite to plan halfway through.

Diamond Invisalign Provider

The Diamond tier is held by the highest-volume Invisalign providers in the UK. It isn't a badge anyone can buy — it reflects sustained experience across hundreds of treated cases. When you're trusting someone to move your teeth, volume of experience matters.

Non-Extraction Wherever Clinically Possible

Dr Mustafa's clinical philosophy is to preserve every healthy tooth where it's safe to do so. Many patients told they need extractions elsewhere have been successfully treated at Ocean without them. That approach earned us the British Orthodontic Society's Against the Odds award — twice.

Award-Winning — Scotland's Best Practice 2023

Ocean Orthodontic Clinic won Overall Practice of the Year and Best New Practice at the Scotland Dental Awards 2023 — competing against every dental practice in Scotland. These are independently judged awards based on clinical standards, patient experience, and outcomes.

Got Questions?

Everything You Need to Know Before You Book

Dr Mustafa is a GDC-listed specialist orthodontist with a PhD in orthodontics, a postgraduate diploma from Warwick, and 20+ years treating complex cases. Most clinics in Edinburgh offering Invisalign are general dentists who've done a short training course — not specialists. The difference matters most when cases are complex, or when treatment needs adjusting mid-way through.

To keep your retainer in good condition, wear it exactly as instructed by your orthodontist. Always store it in its protective case when not in use, avoid exposing it to heat, and handle it carefully to prevent damage or bending.

If you stop wearing your retainer, your teeth can gradually shift back toward their original position. Retainers are essential for maintaining the results of your orthodontic treatment and keeping your smile aligned long-term.

Clean your retainer daily using lukewarm water, a soft toothbrush, and mild soap or retainer cleaner. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the retainer and affect the fit.

Most patients need to wear retainers long-term to maintain straight teeth. Your orthodontist will advise you on how often to wear it, which may begin with full-time wear before moving to nighttime use only.

Retainers are mainly designed to keep teeth in their new position after braces or aligners. In some cases, minor tooth movement can be corrected, but significant changes usually require orthodontic treatment.

If your retainer becomes cracked, loose, or broken, contact your orthodontist as soon as possible. Wearing a damaged retainer may not protect your teeth properly and could lead to unwanted tooth movement.

A removable retainer can develop an unpleasant smell if bacteria and plaque build up over time. Regular cleaning and proper storage help keep your retainer fresh and hygienic.

Retainers should not be painful, but you may feel slight pressure or tightness when wearing them, especially if you have missed a few days. This usually settles quickly as your teeth readjust.
