The Basics

What Is Children’s Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment for children focuses on guiding healthy jaw growth, correcting bite problems, and straightening teeth while your child is still developing. Early treatment can help prevent more complex orthodontic problems later in life and improve how the teeth and jaws function together.

Treatment may involve fixed braces, removable appliances, expanders, or monitoring growth until the ideal time to begin braces. Every child develops differently, which is why timing matters in orthodontics.

We usually recommend an orthodontic assessment from around age 7 onwards, especially if you notice crowding, prominent front teeth, bite problems, or difficulty chewing.

The Benefits

Why Parents Choose Orthodontic Treatment for Their Child?

Early Detection of Problems

Identifying orthodontic issues early allows us to guide jaw growth and tooth development before problems become more difficult to treat.

Children’s orthodontics can improve chewing, speaking, and overall bite function while reducing strain on teeth and jaws.

Reduced Risk of Future Problems

Early orthodontic care may reduce the need for tooth extractions, complicated treatment, or jaw surgery later in life.

The Process

How Children’s Orthodontic Treatment Works at Ocean

01

Your Child’s Consultation

Dr Mustafa will carry out a detailed orthodontic assessment, examining your child’s teeth, jaw development, bite, and facial growth. We’ll discuss your concerns and explain whether treatment is recommended now or best delayed until the right stage of development.

02

Treatment Planning

We take comfortable digital scans and photographs to carefully assess tooth positioning and jaw relationships. This allows us to create a personalised treatment plan tailored specifically to your child’s needs.

03

Starting Treatment

Depending on your child’s case, treatment may involve fixed braces, removable appliances, expanders, or growth-guidance treatment. We’ll explain everything clearly so both you and your child know exactly what to expect.

04

Retainers & Long-Term Stability

Once treatment is complete, retainers help keep your child’s teeth in their new position as they continue to grow and develop. We’ll explain the best retainer option and how to maintain results long term.

Making It Affordable

Spreading the Cost of Treatment

We believe specialist orthodontic care should feel accessible for families. For private patients, we offer finance options through V12 Finance, so your treatment can be paid for across manageable monthly installments rather than a single upfront payment.

We also accept payment by debit card, credit card (excluding American Express), bank transfer, or cash.

Every child’s treatment needs are different, which is why we discuss fees properly during your consultation after examining your child’s teeth and explaining all available options.

There’s absolutely no pressure to commit on the day.

Why Ocean

Why Edinburgh Patients Choose Ocean Orthodontic Clinic

There are other orthodontic options in Edinburgh. Here’s why the patients who do their research tend to end up here.

Treated by a GDC Specialist Orthodontist — Not a General Dentist

Most clinics offering clear aligners and braces in Edinburgh are run by general dentists with short orthodontic training. Dr Mustafa is on the GDC Specialist List in Orthodontics (No. 105727), with a PhD in Orthodontics and a postgraduate diploma from Warwick. That difference matters most when your case is complex — or when something doesn’t go quite to plan halfway through.

Diamond Invisalign Provider

The Diamond tier is held by the highest-volume Invisalign providers in the UK. It isn’t a badge anyone can buy — it reflects sustained experience across hundreds of treated cases. When you’re trusting someone to move your teeth, volume of experience matters.

Non-Extraction Wherever Clinically Possible

Dr Mustafa’s clinical philosophy is to preserve every healthy tooth where it’s safe to do so. Many patients told they need extractions elsewhere have been successfully treated at Ocean without them. That approach earned us the British Orthodontic Society’s Against the Odds award — twice.

Award-Winning — Scotland’s Best Practice 2023

Ocean Orthodontic Clinic won Overall Practice of the Year and Best New Practice at the Scotland Dental Awards 2023 — competing against every dental practice in Scotland. These are independently judged awards based on clinical standards, patient experience, and outcomes.

Got Questions?

Everything You Need to Know Before You Book

Dr Mustafa is a GDC-listed specialist orthodontist with a PhD in orthodontics, a postgraduate diploma from Warwick, and 20+ years treating complex cases. Most clinics in Edinburgh offering Invisalign are general dentists who’ve done a short training course — not specialists. The difference matters most when cases are complex, or when treatment needs adjusting mid-way through.

We generally recommend an orthodontic assessment from around age 7. This allows us to identify developing problems early and decide whether treatment is needed now or later.

Yes. Modern braces and orthodontic appliances are safe, effective, and carefully monitored throughout treatment by a specialist orthodontist.

Early treatment can correct jaw growth issues, prevent severe misalignment, improve facial development, and reduce the need for future tooth extractions or complex procedures.

Common signs include crooked teeth, difficulty biting or chewing, mouth breathing, overcrowded teeth, or early/late loss of baby teeth. An orthodontic evaluation is the best way to confirm if treatment is needed.

Children may be treated with metal braces, ceramic braces, or early interceptive appliances depending on their needs. The choice depends on the severity of alignment issues and jaw development stage.

Children may feel mild discomfort for a few days after braces are fitted or adjusted, but this usually settles quickly as they adapt to the treatment.

No. In early stages, removable appliances or growth-guiding devices may be used before full braces are needed. The treatment depends on your child’s specific dental development.
